The Shimba Hills National Reserve is a small National Reserve in the Coast Province of Kenya. The reserve is an area of coastal rainforest, woodland and grassland. It is an important area for plant biodiversity \u2013 over 50% of the 159 rare plants in Kenya are found in the Shimba Hills, including some endangered species of cycad and orchids. It is also a nationally important site for birds and butterflies.<\/em><\/p>\n

The one day Shimba Hills excursion (is about 40km from Diani Beach) is one of the most popular day trips. The Shimba Hills are over a thousand feet high with a view of both the Indian Ocean and the African Bush. As one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa after Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, this reserve is rich in flora and fauna and hosts the highest density of African elephant in Kenya. Other animal species found in the area are Sable antelope, elephant shrew, bushy tailed mongoose and other small mammals like fruit bats, Columbus monkeys and different bird\u2019s species. The forest is an important bird area and is endowed with forest birdlife while the grasslands hold localized species such as red-necked-Spur fowl, Croaking Cisticola and Zanzibar Red Bishop. The scenic Sheldrick Falls and the dense Mwaluganje Forest are also found here. An excursion to be remembered!<\/p>\n

Early morning pick up at 06:00 a.m from your respective hotel, and then depart for Shimba Hills National Reserve for game drives. On a clear day you can see the outline of Usambara Mountains in Tanzania. A warm welcome awaits you at the Tree Hotel at Kenyan Coast for lunch (Shimba Tree Lodge). Afternoon visit to Sheldrick Falls followed by a 4 km fairly strenuous walk through magnificent forest landscape. Later game drive en route to Mombasa or Diani, arriving in the late afternoon at your respective hotel.<\/p>\n
