Experience the ruins of Gedi, a historical and archaeological site near the Indian Ocean coast.

Gedi is one of many medieval Swahili-Arab coastal settlements that stretch from Mogadishu, Somalia to the Zambezi River in Mozambique. Since the rediscovery of the Gedi ruins by colonialists in the 1920s, Gedi has been one of the most intensely excavated and studied of those sites.

TOUR DESCRIPTION

Our tour starts very early in the morning from your Mombasa hotel to the resort town of Malindi, 120 km northeast of Mombasa. The area shows classic examples of Swahili architecture. Having hosted Vasco de Gama’s fleet in 1498, Malindi has been welcoming strangers ever since. Tourism is the major industry in Malindi, which consists of many attractions and local fishing villages with markets and shops in Arab/African style.

First stop is a historical and archaeological site visit, the Gedi Ruins, one of many medieval Swahili-Arab coastal settlements. Gedi is an ancient ruined city. Its population and prosperity peaked during the fifteenth and into the sixteenth century until it and many other coastal sites began to decline in the late-sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Finally, Gedi was abandoned by the middle of the seventeenth century and the ruins remained obscured until the rediscovery of the ruins by colonialists the 1920s. Since then, Gedi has been one of the most intensely excavated and studied coastal sites.

After Gedi ruins, we will return to Malindi to visit the Marine National Park, which offers an extensive network of coral reef to be discovered on a glass-bottom boat to view the colorful tropical fish and coral. Don’t forget to bring swimming suits and beach shoes.

Lunch will be situated at a specially selected restaurant, followed by a short drive out of the town to a Giriama Village to watch a performance of tribal dancing. Finally, you will also Visit the Malindi falconry and Snake Park.
